Harry Guy Notton was the first Cogenhoe casualty of the Great Wars and the only one who died in service at sea.
The Notton family lived in 54 Station Road before it was a shop. The father of Harry was one of the very last
homeworking makers of hand-made shoes in the village – he worked for T C Mann Shoe company see plaque and 8 & 16.
Harry joined the Royal navy in 1908 and when war was declared in July 1914 he was serving on HMS Hogue which was sunk by torpedo just 2 months later in September. Aged just 22 when he died and commemorated as the first of many heroes which the village lost in that war.
The Society has published the book ‘Cogenhoe’s Fallen Heroes’ telling the stories of the men from the village who gave their lives fighting for our country.
